Apple is said to be planning a major iMac redesign and half-size Mac Pro

In addition to Refurbished MacBook Pros that ditches the Touch Bar and brings MagSafe to lifeApple is also said to be planning to announce the much-anticipated iMac redesign this year – and there’s a pair of Mac Pro updates on the roadmap, too. This is all according to Bloomberg Mark Gorman, Who said the iMac will undergo its most important overhaul since 2012: Apple is said to ditch the chin below the screen, reduce the screen’s bezels, and move to a flat-back design. The overall look is likely to resemble Pro Display XDR.

The new iMac will replace the 27-inch and 21.5-inch versions currently available from Intel and move the all-in-one desktop to an Apple silicon. According to the report, it will be one of the most important visual improvements for any Apple product this year. The current iMac has high-end specs and a nice display in a design that has looked especially outdated over the past couple of years, so that change would be a welcome one. For the Mac Pro, Apple appears to have a two-pronged plan: It will update the design of the existing upgradeable tower – Gurman says the company is considering sticking to Intel processors for this device. The company also appears to be working on a brand new form factor that Gorman says is less than half the total size of the current Mac Pro. “The design will feature a predominantly aluminum exterior and could invoke nostalgia for the Power Mac G4 Cube,” he says.

All of these features will feature Apple’s next-generation Mac processors, which debuted last year’s MacBook Air M1, MacBook Pro and Mac mini. Finally, Apple is said to be planning to launch a new external display that sheds some of the professional display specifications of Pro Display XDR to reach a wider audience of customers. Pro Display XDR starts at $ 5,000, and Apple is currently selling third-party LG displays as a more affordable step-down option. But it looks like a spiritual successor to the Thunderbolt display may be on the way in 2021.
